YONKERS MAYOR MIKE SPANO OPENS EMERGENCY OPERATIONS CENTER IN ADVANCE OF SEVERE WEATHER; URGES RESIDENTS TO TAKE NECESSARY PRECAUTIONS

YONKERS, NY JULY 26, 2012 Mayor Mike Spano is urging Yonkers residents to be prepared for severe thunderstorms expected to pass through the region this afternoon and evening. These storms may come with large hail, damaging winds and heavy rain. At the Mayors direction, the City of Yonkers has opened its Emergency Operations Center in preparation for any emergency situation that should occur. Mayor Spano is encouraging residents to take the following necessary precautions before the severe weather arrives:

Tie down or bring inside lawn furniture, trash cans, tools and hanging plants that could be projectiles during the storm. If you have a basement, check sump pumps to ensure they are operating and be prepared to use a backup system. Have a standby generator or alternative source of power available. Check on neighbors, especially the elderly and disabled.

As these storms approach our area I urge all residents to take action in preparing for what may be very severe weather conditions, said Mayor Spano. As the storms pass please remain indoors, stay away from windows and report any damage. If you see downed power lines do not touch them and call 911. For all non-emergencies such as small branches or clogged catch basins please call the mayors help line at 377-HELP (4357).
