    During the Cuban Missile Crisis in October 1962, a U.S. spy plane discovered the Soviet Union was building missile sites in Cuba. President John F. Kennedy met with his advisors for days to determine a response. Kennedy decided on a naval blockade of Cuba to prevent further Soviet missiles from entering the island. He informed the American public and tensions escalated between the U.S. and U.S.S.R. Eventually, Kennedy and Soviet Premier Nikita Khrushchev reached an agreement where the Soviets agreed to remove missiles from Cuba and the U.S. agreed to remove missiles from Turkey.
