Analytic Proof of Some Geometric Theorems

M.A.J. Vidallo Makati Science High School In proving theorems analytically, it is helpful to place the vertices of the polygon in appropriate and convenient location i.e. in coordinate axes in order to make the computation easier. Mind Stretching Exercises 1. Prove that the diagonals of an isosceles trapezoid are equal. 2. Prove that the isosceles triangle has two equal medians. 3. Prove that the midpoint of the hypotenuse of a right triangle is equidistant from three vertices. 4. Prove that the diagonals of a rhombus bisect each other and are perpendicular. 5. Prove that the line segment joining the midpoints of the nonparallel sides of a trapezoid is parallel to the bases and half as long. 6. Prove analytically that the line joining the midpoints of two sides of a triangle is parallel to the third side and half as long. 7. Prove that the line segments joining the midpoints of the opposite sides of any quadrilateral bisect each other. 8. Prove that the sum of the squares of the sides of a parallelogram is equal to the sum of the squares of the diagonals. 9. Prove that the medians of a triangle intersect at a point two-thirds of the way from each vertex to the midpoint of the opposite side. 10. Prove that the line segments joining the midpoints of adjacent sides of a quadrilateral form a parallelogram.
