Design and Analysis of a Geneva Device

M.Senthil Kumar

ABSTRACT
The design and the analysis of a Geneva Device are discussed here. Geneva device finds their application in many fields starting from the lathe, where they are used for switching tools and in projectors too. Geneva is one of the earliest of all intermittent motion mechanisms, where input is in form of continuous rotation. This is a type of clamping mechanism which it is, either used to hold the work piece or the tool. This paper also contains general analytical results which can be applied to high-speed Geneva design. The results are derived from classical mechanics theory and provide explicit relationships between the performance parameters (those parameters such as contact stress, maximum load, etc., which can have a significant effect on the mechanism performance) and the design variables which specify a Geneva mechanism (number of slots, wheel diameter, pin diameter, etc.). The solid 3d modeling of a Geneva device is also presented here.
