National Security Desire to unite and control Maintenance of the Union Growth of Home Rule Movement Parties against each other

National Security
Napoleonic Wars Ireland would be the perfect launch pad for attack. Ireland became a security risk for the rest of Britain that needed to be pacified. The Act of Union in 1800 served this purpose by controlling Ireland from Westminster

United Irishmen posed a threat via a revolution to the landlords

Desire to Unite and Control


Like with Scotland, Britain hoped that a Union would successfully pacify Ireland and its security threats

Britain believed that similar to Scotland, Ireland would thrive economically and become a strong political ally
This belief was never achieved

Maintenance of the Union


Up until Gladstone, British politicians believed the best way to benefit Ireland would be through maintenance of the Union

Catholic emancipation and the following reform bills showed Britains attempt to appease the Irish

Growth of the Home rule Movement


The Fenian outrages caused a change in heart for Gladstone. He believed Home Rule was now the solution to the Irish Problem After several failed attempts, it was the 1911 parliament act that made Home Rule an achievable goal.
