on the lower Arrow Lake near Castlegar.
The work includes the drilling and blasting of solid rock
for the production of various riprap products; excavation
and placement of native material; supply and placement
of various granular aggregates; supply and installation of
socketed steel pipe piles; a foating breakwater; a foating
dock; a toilet structure; precast concrete panels; corru-
gated steel culverts with headwalls; non-woven geotextile
and concrete roadside barriers; supply and placement of
cast-in-place concrete, and the placement of riprap.
There is a mandatory pre-tender meeting and site visit
scheduled for August 13, 2012, which must be attended

Te new BMX track located at the Salmo Ski Hill is
ready for riders on Monday nights, beginning August 6
from 6 pm to 8 pm.
Te program will start as a riding and starting gate prac-
tice night with a registration drive and then switch to a
race format in the coming weeks.
Tis includes young children on push bikes to the 61
and over class. And with membership, you can race at
tracks all over BC, Ontario, and the US.
Local riders are urged to demo the track for free and
take a spin around the jumps and berms.
Mountain bikes, childrens coaster brake bikes, and push
bikes are welcome and there will be four sizes of BMX
race bikes to try out.
Membership is $55 a year and this allows the rider to take
part in races and starting gate practice. Tere is also a free
one day membership which can be a great way to try it out.

Celebrating all community with Pride, Kootenay Pride
presents an afernoon cofee house during Pride Week-

Marie Celine Wozniak
(nee Gauthier), passed away
peacefully July 19th, 2012
at the Trail Regional Hospital.
Celine, the youngest child
of Conrad Gauthier and Jeanne
Gauthier (nee Champagne), was
born October 24th, 1929 in the
village of Ste. Anne, Manitoba.
She was pre-deceased by her
loving husband Pierre, her parents
and six siblings. Celine will be
remembered by her sisters Mrs.
Estelle Perrin of Manitoba and
Sister Therese Gauthier of Quebec,
as well as many nieces and nephews.
Pierre and Celine were married in 1959. They lived in Manitoba
before moving to Kaslo in 1978 when they purchased Kaslo Loggers
Supply and settled along Kootenay Lake. Kaslo gradually became
their home and Celine retained fond memories of her family, friends
and life in Manitoba. Following Pierre`s death she lived by Kootenay
Lake before moving into the town of Kaslo. She enjoyed being with
her friends, visits from family, playing golf, preparing gourmet meals,
playing the organ at church, attending cribbage games at the Legion
and the company of her dog, Sasha.
The family wishes to say thank you to all her friends who were an
important part of her life and to the staff of the Victorian Community
Health Centre of Kaslo for years of caring.
A funeral service will be held at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in
Kaslo on August 8th at 1:00 pm followed by a reception at the Legion.

Frank was born in Regina, Saskatch-
ewan to John and Veronica Flegel.
He was predeceased by his Iather

Frank is survived by his loving

Frank met Mary while working at
the Sandon mines in 1951. Frank
and Mary married on April 25, 1952
in New Denver. Moving to Long-
beach to raise their fve children,
Frank worked as a carpenter, mine
worker and then on the BalIour and
Anscomb Ierries in BalIour Ior 29
years until his retirement. He also
served in the army in WWII as a pri-
vate, driving truck and motorbiking
between cities and countries deliver-
ing supplies and inIormation.
Frank`s greatest passion and giIt to
Iamily and Iriends was his wonderIul
and soothing massages. Kids always
received loonies/toonies when they
visited and Fisherman`s Friends loz-
enges Ior all.
Frank and Mary celebrated 60 years

New Hospice Society
For Kaslo And Area D
Hospice is an international term used for organizations
that provide compassionate, supportive services to assist
individuals in their last stages of life. Hospice groups and
their volunteers strive to promote dignity, quality of life,
social, emotional, and other types of support to clients
and their loved ones during palliative care and the be-
reavement period.
Kaslo and Area Hospice has supported our commun-
ity for many years under the governance of Nelson and
District Hospice Society (NDHS). It is now in a time of
transition as it moves to self-governance as the non-proft
Hospice Society of North Kootenay Lake (HSNKL).
Te new society will soon be ready to ofer its services
to the public. For the time being, requests for hospice sup-
port from local volunteers can be made through NDHS
by calling 250-353-2299. Training for new volunteers will
be ofered this fall and again in the spring of 2013. If you
are considering becoming a hospice volunteer, please call

In the near future, the new Hospice Society of North

Pets Afected
By Secondhand Smoke, Too
Lighting up a cigarette may not just hurt yourself and
the people around you. Your pet may be paying the price
for your habit, too.
Veterinarians say that secondhand smoke is a threat to
dogs and cats as well as humans. Secondhand smoke, also
known as environmental tobacco smoke, or ETS, is a mix-
ture of the smoke given of by the burning end of a ciga-
rette or cigar and the smoke that is exhaled by the smoker.
Research indicates that secondhand smoke contains more
than 5,000 substances, many of which are known to cause
cancer in humans and other animals.
A number of studies have found that nonsmokers who
regularly breathe the tobacco smoke from others are at a
higher risk for developing heart disease or certain cancers,
like lung cancer. Tere also have been numerous scientifc
papers that report the pronounced health threat second-
hand smoke poses to pets. Some veterinarians have linked
tobacco smoke to lung and nasal cancer in dogs, lung can-
cer in birds and oral cancer and lymphoma in cats.
Indeed, according to a study by Colorado State Uni-
versity, pets that live with smokers have a higher risk of
developing particular types of cancer, including twice the
risk of developing lung cancer.
Long-nosed canines, such as collies, may be suscept-
ible to nasal cancers because carcinogens from cigarette
smoke lodge in the large surface area of the nasal cavity
and sinuses, says a study published in the American Jour-
nal of Epidemiology. However, short- and medium-nosed
breeds are more susceptible to lung cancer because the
nose doesnt trap the carcinogens as easily, allowing them
to quickly travel to the lungs, where they take root.
Bird owners may already be familiar with avians sus-
ceptibility to respiratory illnesses from in-air contamin-
ants. Birds respiratory systems are very sensitive to air
pollutants, including cigarette smoke.
Pets are also afected by something known as third-
hand smoke. Tis is the residue that collects in areas
where smokers frequent. It is found on interior surfaces of
the home and even on people and pets themselves. Cats,
which are notably self-groomers, tend to develop oral mal-
adies because they are licking harmful chemicals, includ-
ing third-hand smoke, from their bodies on a daily basis.
Tufs College of Veterinary Medicine conducted a study
that showed that the number of cats living with mouth
cancer was higher for those living in homes with smokers
than those cats living in smoke-free homes. Tere is also
evidence that cats living with a smoker are twice as likely
to develop malignant lymphoma. Tird-hand smoke may
also provoke skin allergies and irritation.
When individuals think of smoking-related complica-
tions, they tend to think solely of fellow human beings.
However, pets are susceptible to cancer as well, and sec-
ondhand smoke can be just as deadly to your four-legged
friends as it can be to your family.

Kokanee Return Celebration
Its just about time to welcome the Kokanee back to Ko-
kanee Creek.
Te Kokanee Creek Visitors Centre will be hosting the frst
annual RedFish Fest, Sunday, August 26 from 11 am to 6 pm
at Kokanee Creek Park.
Te Kokanee are such an important part of the web of life
here that we felt it was time to celebrate their annual return,
says Visitor Centre director Mel Reasoner. Birds, mammals,
even humans, all partake of the Kokanee.
We want to use the day to educate and celebrate with
music, salmon walks, food and kids activities. We will have
trained naturalists on site for walks along the channel as well
as local fsheries and parks people to answer questions, says
Reasoner.
Funded in part by BC Parks, the Regional District of Cen-
tral Kootenay and Columbia Basin Trust, the event is free to
the public. Parking is located at the group site on the south
side of Kokanee Creek.
Te festival will include music from Brian Rosen and the
What Now, Billy and Earl, pin the tail on the Kokanee and
face painting and more for kids, food and craf vendors.
We want to put forth a strong conservation ethic, says
Reasoner. Tis is the time to learn more about the spawn-
ing channel as well as the life cycle of the landlocked sockeye
salmon, which is known as the Kokanee, and the importance
of Kokanee habitat.

Crown Land For Agriculture Report
Kaslo Food Security has been working on a project to map,
identify and hopefully acquire crown land that could be held
in trust for the use of local farmers. With the help of Selkirk
student Robyn Hicks and North Kootenay Lake Community
Service Society (NKLCSS) Of ce Manager Heather Hamil-
ton, we were able to produce 11 maps outlining arable, crown
land within electoral area D, Regional District Central Koote-
nay. Included in this process was a breakdown of the applica-
tions for leasing crown land.
Te land identifed in this process is limited. We did iden-
tify one parcel in Meadow Creek that would be suitable and
have confrmed with government agents that it is not current-
ly leased. Tis parcel is about 100 acres, but the lease require-
ments would limit our application to only accessing about 30
acres. Te land itself has a road, but would need to be cleared
and there are no services currently for this parcel. To see the
maps and other potential parcels within Area D, please fol-
low the link on our main page. On June 18 we presented our
maps and the application details to 20 local residents. Several
residents were interested in pursuing crown land for their
own farming enterprises and we were able to assist them in
identifying potential parcels that might meet their needs. Un-
fortunately, we were unable to gain commitment from a core
group of people interested in a group efort to secure land for
future farmers. Consequently, we have had to postpone our
own applications until we have local support for a steering
committee. We will be able to still act upon this project for
another year should enough people come forward to assist
and participate. However, afer 2013, we will not be pursuing
this process as an organization.

Knowledge is power, creativity is magical. Come and
experience the West Kootenay Womens Association and
the Nelson and District Womens Centres (NDWC) new-
est project, Community Treads. Tis is an intergenera-
tional program
that consists of
two parts: free
monthly work-
shops on learn-
ing specifc skills
such as knitting,
quilting and em-
broidery; and
free weekly skill
sharing sessions
where women
will mentor each
other in textile
skills.

day, many of us
have missed out
on these inherit-
ances, and many
of these practices are being lost. Many women who come
to the Womens Centre have expressed a desire to learn to
sew, knit or crochet. Here is our chance to learn and to
teach! Imagine making moccasins, learning about natural
dyes or creating rag rugs?
Have you ever wanted to learn new textile skills? Sign
up for a free workshop; bring your mum, your daughters,
your aunt and girlfriends! Got little ones? Let us know
and well provide childcare.
Cant remember something from the workshop or need
a bit more explanation? Perhaps you missed the work-
shop. Come on over to the Womens Centre (420 Mill
Street) in Nelson on Fridays from 10 am to 1 pm, get a
cup of tea and receive help with your project.
Sit together with other women willing to mentor you as
you practice your new skill. Learn to knit, sew, crochet,
spin, weave, embroider, make quilts, moccasins, natural
dyes, rag rugs its really up to you. What do you want
to learn?
On Saturday, August 11 from 1 pm to 4 pm, Stella Smith
will show us how to make rag rugs out of old clothes. Stel-
la says its easy and fun come and fnd out for yourself!
Each workshop is taught by skilled local women shar-
ing their love of the craf.
Every Friday you can come and meet with mentors who
can answer questions and help you make progress on
your chosen project.
Community Treads can also help if you need some
yarn or fabric or knitting needles. Do you have some knit-
ting needles, crochet hooks, fabric, yarn or craf supplies
that you no longer need? We are looking for all kinds of
supplies that we can pass along to women who need them.
