Homework : Analysis of Christina Rosetti's poem ''Remember'' (1862) The poem 'Remember' by Christina Rosetti, which was published

in 1862, deals with the thoughts of a deceased woman, who reminisces about the memories she and her loved one had, when she still lived. The female speaker continues describing her desire to be remembered, but contrary to that, she also tells the listener to stop thinking about her, otherwise he 'should remember and be sad' (l. 14). This utterance shows, that the speaker is at odds with herself : on one hand, she wants to be remembered, but on the other hand, she is able to relate to the thought of coming to terms with the dead of a loved one and moving on in life. One of the major themes in this poem is love,as seen in the relationship between the speaker, and her love, the listener. Concering this matter, the speaker speaks directly to the listener, by using the pronouns 'I' (l.1) and 'You' (l. 6). Moreover, the existence of a relationship between the aforementioned persons is proven by saying that she and the listener can not 'hold [her] by the hand' (l.3). She also indicates that the relationship between them must be very complex, advanced and serious, because the listener had planned a future for them (cf.l.6) In the first two stanzas, the poem follows a ABBA ABBA rhyme scheme, in which a typical image of a blooming romance is created. However, the last stanza has a different rhyme pattern (CDDECE) which implies that the relationship was/is not in a perfect state, opposing the aforementioned description. Besides that, this stanza is also in stark contrast with the first two, inasmuch as she asserts the listener to forget her; in the beginning she insists that he should remember her (cf. ll.18 and ll.9 et seq.)
