What does Literacy mean to you?


Being able to read and write

Ability to communicate orally and visually Being able to comprehend language or any code of communication

How often do you read?


All the time! I read: Newspapers, books for school purposes, stories that my students write I also read: Instructional manuals, websites, sports articles, etc.

What do you enjoy reading?


Enjoy reading about sports Scientific articles

Describe a positive literacy experience from your past.


When I was a child, I liked sharing stories in front of large audiences because other students used to laugh at my stories. From this experience, I learned that one is not writing for oneself, but rather for an audience.

Describe a negative literacy experience from your past.


A negative experience was when my Gr. 3 teacher ripped my work and said that it was not neat and she told me to do it again.

What forms of literature do you enjoy reading today?


Online computer articles such as blogs Sports Websites Facebook notes and articles Twitter tweets/Status updates

As an educationalist, how do you feel that teachers could make literacy more engaging for boys? Students should have greater choice and freedom in what to read, rather than being forcing to read certain texts. Incorporation of technology so students could read texts online (e.g. during computer class). I use my Smart Board to show students online articles. I then pass the website links to students so that they could visit the websites at home. My male students are interested in anything online, as they think it is cool.
