SOCIOLOGY OF EDUCATION

Choose only one topic. The essay must be typewritten (double spacing) with proper references / footnotes. The essay should be 8 10 pages in length, not counting title page and reference section. Student must cite a minimum of 6 scholarly sources in their essay. Scholarly sources include books, journals and data sources where the source of information is clear. 1. Examine the reasons why girls are outperforming boys in most subjects and at most levels of education. 2. Examine the ways in which teachers attitudes can effect the educational achievement of pupils.
3. Examine sociological explanations of difference in the educational performance of students

of different ethnic groups in Malaysia. 4. Examine the ways in which schools appear to benefit middle class pupils more than working-class pupils. 5. Examine the ways the poorer educational performance of working-class pupils may be the result of poverty and negative attitudes towards education. 6. Examine sociological explanations of the existence and role of private education in Malaysia.
7. Would you describe your middle and high school as rural, suburban, or urban? Do you

think your experiences would have been significantly different if you had attended another kind of middle or high school? 8. How would you describe the culture of your home environment? Was it rich or poor regarding support for education? 9. What do you think is the greatest challenge facing teachers today in term of practicing their profession?
10. Please take a moment and reflect of what might be your three greatest fears about

becoming a teacher and offer a paragraph or two of commentary on each about why you feel this way.
11. Then, take a moment and list what you believe will be the three greatest rewards that you

look forward in your new profession as a teacher and a bit of commentary on each about why these would be enough of a positive force to offset your fears.
