TEACHING GRAMMAR THROUGH PLAY/DIALOGUES

Theme: World of Knowledge Topic: Fruit Target group: Year 4 Focal skill: Grammar (Adjective) Integrated skill: Listening and Speaking Approach used: Covert grammar teaching Objectives: At the end of the lesson, pupils should be able to: 1. Use the adjective to describe the fruits. 2. Use the correct adjectives in conversation.

Set Induction 1. Teacher will show flashcards of fruits and asks the pupils to name it. 2. The pupils will be randomly chosen to name the fruit shown by the teacher. Presentation 1. The teacher will ask the pupils certain questions in order to activate their prior knowledge.

2. The questions are as follows: - What is your favourite fruits? - How does it looks like? - How does it taste? - What can you do with the fruits? 3. The pupils will respond to teachers questions and teacher will write down the answer on the blackboard.

Practice 1. The pupils will be divided into 6 groups of 5. 2. The teacher will assign them to do a role play. 3. The situation given is a fruit stall where the pupils need to promote their fruits. 4. In group of 5, three will be the fruits, one will be the seller and the other one will be the buyer. 5. The pupils who act as fruits need to promote themselves in order to be bought by the buyer. 6. The teacher will assist the pupils to construct the dialogues for the role play.

Production 1. Each group will present the role play in front of the class. 2. After all the groups have presented, the teacher will give feedback for improvement. Closure 1. The teacher recapitulates the lesson by explaining what they have learnt, which is about adjective.

Example
Seller: Please come and buy the fruits. Grape: I am small, sweet and delicious. I can be made into jam. Please buy me. Orange: I am round and sour, but I am very tasty. You can turn me into juices. Buy me, please. Durian: I smelled strong, and my skin is pointy. I am sweet, and you can make me into tempoyak. Buyer: I would like to buy a kilo of durian please. Seller: Yes, thank you. That would cost you RM 10. Buyer: Thank you. Here it is.

Benefits of Using Play and Dialogues in ESL Classroom


Provide an opportunity to develop the imagination of the students. Provides an opportunity for independent thinking (McCaslin 1996). Encourage the students to express their own ideas and contribute to the whole. Creative drama will offer exercises in critical thinking and the chance for the students to be creative.

Develop their own ideas as well as skills of cooperation when interacting with classmates. An excellent method for studying human nature and working in harmony. Provides the opportunity for a healthy release of emotion in a safe setting which can work to relieve the tension of learning in a second language.

In general, the acquisition of meaningful, fluent interaction in the target language The assimilation of a whole range of pronunciation and prosodic features in a fully contextualized and interactional manner; The fully contextualized acquisition of new vocabulary and structure; An improved sense of confidence in the student in his or her ability to learn the target language.
