Barbie Bungee

Objective: In this experiment we will determine a linear equation for the distance a Barbie falls given the number of rubber bands tied to her ankles. Step 1: Loop a rubber band together and secure them to your doll. Drop the Barbie and record the distance she drops from the platform to the lowest point in column two of the chart and plot the points in the graph below. (record in cm) # of rubber bands cm dropped 1 Rubber band 2 rubber bands 3 rubber bands 4 rubber bands Step 2: Find the difference between how far the Barbie Dropped with 2 rubber bands and how far it Dropped with three and record in column 3. Continue to find the difference between 3 and 4 And so on. Step 3: Select 2 points from the chart above and write an Equation in slope-intercept form.

Distance dropped (cm)

Number of Rubber bands

Step 4: Next find the average of the values in column 3.

Step 5: measure the height of your Barbie.

Step 6: Using your solution from step 4 as your slope and your solution from step 5 as your y-intercept write The equation for the line.

Is the equation of this line similar to your first equation in Step 3? Compare and contrast.

What does the x variable represent? What does the y variable represent?

Use the equation from step 6 to determine the number of rubber bands needed to drop the Barbie within 30 cm from the ground without touching.
