DC GENERATOR

1. Draw and explain the construction of a dc generator. Mention the material used and functions of : 1) Yoke 2) Poles 3) Armature 2. Draw circuit diagrams of different types of D.C.generators. Write current & voltage equations for each 3. Give the classification of a dc generator with neat diagrams. 4. A 4-pole lap-wound, shunt generator has armature with 750 conductors. The flux per pole is 20 mWb and the generator supplies 100 nos. of 220 V, 60 W lamps. Determine the speed of the generator. Armature and field winding resistances are 0.1 , and 100 respectively. 5. A long shunt generator running at 1200 r.p.m. supplies 22 KW at a terminal voltage of 220 V .The resistances of armature, shunt field and the series field are 0.05,110 and 0.06 respectively. The overall efficiency at above load is 88%. Find (1) Cu losses (2) Iron &friction losses (3) The torque exerted by the prime mover. DC Motor Compare rheostatic control and field control methods for speed control of d.c. shunt motor. Draw and explain the construction of a three point starter for d.c. shunt motor. Explain the function of Hold-on Coil and Overload Coil in it. Explain three point starter for D.C. shunt motor. Why Starters are used in d.c.shunt motors? Explain 3-point Starter With neat diagram Sketch and explain the speed-current, speed-torque and torque-current characteristics of a d.c. shunt and series motor. Write the difference between d.c. generator and d.c.motor. Armature resistance of a d.c. shunt motor is 5 ohm. On full-load it runs at 1600 r.p.m. taking an armature current of 10 A from 220 V supply. Determine fullload

torque and starting torque. A d.c. shunt motor runs at a speed of 1000 rpm on no load taking a current of 6 A from the supply, when connected to 220 V d.c. supply. If full load current is 50 A. Calculate its speed on full load. Assume Ra=0.30 ohm, Rsh=110 ohm.

A series motor takes 25 A at 410 V and runs at a certain speed for a given load. Armature and field winding resistance is 0.4 ohm total. If the load is such that its torque varies as cube of the speed. Determine the value of a resistance required to be connected in series with armature to reduce the motor speed to 50%.
