Are mammograms more harmful than helpful?

Question:
Ive read a lot lately that ionizing radiation, which is know to cause cancer, is used in a mammogram, which makes it kind of dangerous. Can you clarify?

Your question is a common one, but is based on dated information. Today, like so much else, technology has changed since the mammogram was rst introduced in the 1970s. Current digital mammography only involves a tiny amount of radiation, equivalent to the amount you are exposed to naturally over the course of a year.

Explanation:

Robin Ciocca, DO Breast Surgeon Lankenau Medical Center

Prevention:

A digital mammogram, which is the exam that is performed during an annual visit, captures a set of x-ray images of the breasts electronically. These images are displayed on a high-resolution computer monitor where they can be enhanced or magnied for a more accurate evaluation. During your digital mammogram, your radiologist will check for masses, distortions and calcications in the breast. If they do detect an abnormality, you will be scheduled for a follow-up test to further investigate these ndings.

Screening and Detection:

The single biggest factor in successfully treating breast cancer is nding it in its earliest stage, which is why mammography is imperative. The Comprehensive Breast Center at Lankenau offers highly-trained, boardcertied radiologists and the most sophisticated technology to provide you with the most advanced program available for screening and detection. With appointments available Monday through Saturday, a mammogram can be scheduled to t your busy schedule.
