Scientific Notation

NUMBER SENSE STRAND

Standard
7NS1.1 Read, write, and compare rational numbers in scientific notation and standard notation.

Objective
Students will be able to... change a number written in standard notation into scientific notation. change a number written in scientific notation into standard notation.

Definition of Scientific Notation

Scientific notation is... a simple way to write very large or very small numbers using powers of 10.

Why Scientific Notation?

Scientific notation is useful

in math and science classes. We use it because it is shorter than writing out a very long number, and its easier to read.

Examples
Here are some examples of the same numbers written first in standard notation and then in scientific notation: 760,000,000,000 = 7.6 x 1011 0.00000056 = 5.6 x 10-7 140 = 1.4 x 102

Writing a number in scientific notation

A number in scientific notation is always written as: A number between 1 and 10, multiplied by 10 raised to a power. Example: 2 x 10-12

Are these numbers written in scientific notation?

12 x 3.5 x 103 -15 5.5 x 10 11 1.2 x 20

Yes or No?

Let's practice together :)

The radius of the earths orbit is 150,000,000,000 meters. What is this number in scientific notation?

Let's practice together :)

Step 1 : Find the number between 1-10 That number is 1.5 Step 2: Count how many places the decimal has to move to get a number between 1-10 That number is 11 places Step 3: Write in scientific notation
1.5 x 1011

Two more examples:

Change 0.081 to scientific notation: Change 970 to scientific notation: Change 7.7 x 102 into standard notation:

Time to practice by yourself

Complete the practice problem worksheet by yourself and we will review it together as a class after everyone is finished.

Do you know how to....?

Change a very big number into scientific notation? Change a very small number into scientific notation? Change scientific notation into a
regular number?

Questions...
1. Why would a scientist prefer to write

a very long number (like 0.00000000009254) in scientific notation?

1. In which two classes would you be

able to use scientific notation? (In college or high school)
