    The two most challenging deserts travelers encountered on the Silk Road were the Taklamakan Desert and the Gobi Desert. The Taklamakan Desert is located in present-day Xinjiang, China and the Gobi Desert spans parts of modern Mongolia and China. Both deserts featured unforgiving terrain of sandy dunes and little vegetation, making travel across them difficult and dangerous for those braving the Silk Road trade route.
