Emergency Operations and Planning The City of Santa Fe is currently at a Steady State Operations level (maintaining situational awareness, no Emergency Operations Center personnel activation). The Citys Situation Assessment Team will be monitoring events throughout the weeks Fiesta events. The City of Santa Fe Hazard Mitigation Plan is currently under revision, meeting schedule to be posted on the City of Santa Fe website calendar when finalized. All are welcome (and encouraged) to attend these planning meetings. Weekly Emergency Preparedness Tip (One thing you can do to prepare for an emergency) Many of us will be attending large gatherings this week as part of the Fiesta de Santa Fe. Make sure your cell phone is fully charged before heading out to the event so you can contact others in your party if you get separated. Since cell service can become overwhelmed during large events, designate a meeting place and time in case you become separated from your group and cell service is interrupted. This Week in Disaster History (A look back at disasters that have shaped the todays preparedness climate) September 9, 2010: A residential gas line in the city of San Bruno (near San Francisco, CA) exploded, damaging or destroying 45 homes, injuring 45 people, and leaving 8 dead. An investigation into the accident determined faulty welds on the transmission pipeline, as well as other factors, led to this disaster. Lessons learned: The utilities we use to power our homes and businesses can create hazardous situations, and it is important to know how to avoid letting these hazards become disasters. Electrical lines, propane storage tanks, and underground gas lines are among the most common utility hazards in our community. Avoid contact with downed power lines (whether they appear to be live or not), regularly inspect propane tanks and connections for damage or leaks, and call 811 (or 1-800-321-2537) or visit the NM 811 website before digging in your yard to have underground utility lines marked.
