YEAR 9 SAP PROGRAMME: FUNCTIONAL ENGLISH AND COMMUNICATION

COOKING RICE
Assessed Learning Outcomes Students will: Identify and label the various components involved in cooking rice Sequence and categorise the process of how to cook rice Explain the events happening in cooking rice Task 1 Language/Skills Focus Advance Teacher Preparation Vocabulary Vocabulary (food and cooking) Safety talk about cooking using a burner stove Task 2 Writing Brainstorming or mindmapping about cooking process Bring a cooking pot Task 3 Speaking & Vocabulary Safety talk about electrical appliances Bring an electric rice cooker Vocabulary Task 4 Vocabulary Vocabulary (utensils in the kitchen) Mind-mapping about washing and cooking utensils and what role water takes in both processes 2 periods Vocabulary worksheets Vocabulary exercise given to students (categorising various utensils to respective columns of washing and cooking) Task 5 Listening, Speaking & Reading, Video show about the rice cooker Product pamphlets & brochures about various types of rice cookers

2 periods Compare ways of cooking rice Reminder of electrical hazards Teacher shows the various parts of a rice cooker Teacher demonstrates cooking rice using an electric cooker Students able to compare the different ways to cook rice by using different elements (fire & electricity)

2 periods Video discussion Discussion about specifications stated in pamphlets and brochures Teacher goes through the program manual of an automated rice cooker with students. Students able to cook rice at home and show confidence in recognising when rice is cooked or not.

Students able to correctly label a cooking pot

Students able to sequence the steps of cooking rice Students realise the importance of safety when cooking on a stove

Students realise the important role water has in various processes.
