American Academy of Pediatrics backs Khatna -
an ancient and Islamic tradition
At a time when the traditional practice of performing circumcisions on male infants is drawing international attention on account of some radical
stances taken by groups that oppose this practice in Germany, Denmark, Austria and even in the Bay area of San Francisco and the fashionable
sidewalks of Santa Monica, the American Academy of Pediatricians has weighed in on the benefits of this traditional observance pointing to new
research that may protect heterosexual men against H.I.V.
Helen Weiss, who has studied the subject of circumcision at the London School of Hygiene & tropical Medicine told Reuters Health in an interview
published by Reuters on August 21, 2012, that, "Foreskin is rich in HIV target cells and therefore, a man without foreskin is less likely to contract
HIV and some other sexually transmitted infections".
In an informative New York Times article, Roni Caryn Rabin points out that the "academy stopped short of recommending routine circumcision for
all baby boys, saying the decision remains a family matter". The August 27, 2012 issue of the Journal of Pediatrics is the first update of the
academy's policy in over a decade and it is important to note that the academy in its statement said that circumcision should be covered by
insurance.
Presently in the United States over half the number of male infants undergo circumcision which is much higher than the figures for European
countries. Yet, about 20 years ago, the numbers of U.S. male children undergoing circumcision was nearly 80%. It is also interesting to note that
Medicaid has cut funding for this practice (unless medically stipulated) in 18 states.
Johns Hopkins has recently published a report in the Archives of Pediatrics & Adoloscent Medicine pointing to billions of avoidable health care
costs with the declining trend in circumcision. It is estimated that the costs for treating various related diseases like HIV, HPV, UTI and other related
costs could be as high as $4.4 billion circumcision for babies born over a decade long span.
While circumcision is a household word within Jewish and Muslim families, according to an insightful piece in RH Reality Check, author Martha
Kempner writes that "Hispanics are less likely to go for this practice than white or black parents" and "Dads who have undergone the procedure
themselves are more likely to have their sons circumcised according to a study in Denver". Or, that "A 2009 study revealed that 75% of boys in the
Midwest underwent this procedure while only 25% of the boys in the West did.
As 0ur young sons and daughters take on the roles of fathers and mothers who must ultimately make these decisions for their families, let faith,
backed by medical evidence prevail.

WASHINGTON - Ex-Navy SEAL, who wrote a

The author of No Easy Day sought legal

The former commando is proud of his service

But he has earned the right to tell his story;
his abiding interest is to ensure that he is

The rebuttal came a day after the Pentagon

US Threatens Legal
Action Over SEALs
Bin Laden Book
WASHINGTON - The Pentagon on Thursday
threatened legal action against the former
Navy SEAL who has written a book recounting
his role in the May 2011 raid that killed al

The Pentagons top lawyer, Jeh Johnson, told
the author he had broken his promise to abide

before he retired from the military this year.
The letter did not indicate whether the book
had revealed secrets that could endanger US
forces but made clear that simply by failing to
clear the manuscript with the military, the Navy
SEAL had broken faith with his obligations.
