Waters Events of Precise Historical Meaning Individuals abilities to participate in the discourse of American history and to be taken seriously depend on the extent and depth of their knowledge of American history. The years of 1492, 1620et al., have precise historical meanings for most American historians. -William B. Scott, Professor of History at Kenyon College You will be expected to know the following dates in American history as we begin to prepare for the national exam in May: 1607 1619 1620 1630 1692 1730 1754 1763 1775 1776 1781 1785 1787 1800 1803 1812 1820 1823 1824 1837 1845 1850 1857 1861 1865 1877 1886 1894 1898 1901 1911 1917 1919 1929 1933 1938 1941 1942 1945 1948 1950 1953 1954 1960 1962 1963 1965 1968 1972 1974 1979 1980 1983 1987 1991 1998 2000 2001 You will create a flashcard for each of these dates. On one side, feature the year and a related image (print, cut out and paste it on). On the flip side, record the events of that year that make it historically significant. Color and creativity are encouraged! Each flashcard will be graded out of five points. Due dates: Friday September 21st: 1607-1763 Friday October 5th: 1775-1812 Friday October 19th: 1820-1877 Friday November 2nd: 1886-1919 Friday November 16th: 1929-1948 Friday November 30th: 1950-1974 Friday December 14th: 1979-2001 Following Winter Term, you will be tested on each of these dates at the beginning or end of class. Each quiz will be worth 15 points: five points per section. You will need to know the following for these timed quizzes: 1. Date (will be given randomly by Mrs. Waters) 2. Historical significance and why this date is important- put it in context. An era? War? Presidency? You may list multiple events. 3. Most important figure or group involved and why.* 4. Secondary figure or group involved and why.* *Select the events you believe are most important based on the AP curriculum combined with your own justifications. I will let you know if you miss the mark! As a result of this yearlong initiative, you will know these dates cold, and will have informed talking points for the free-response essays!
