Thomas Alva Edison

Thomas Alva Edison was born the seventh and youngest child in his family in the town of Milan, Ohio. As a young boy, he was very intelligent. His mother decided to teach him at home. Edison loved books and he read avidly. He showed great interest in science and chemistry. When he was young, he constructed a laboratory in the basement of his house to conduct experiments on his own.

Edison was also very active and diligent. To earn some money to buy more apparatus and chemicals for his laboratory, he sold newspapers and snacks on board the Grand Trunk Railway. He was only twelve years old at that time. With the permission of the railway authorities, he set up a printing shop at the railway station to publish his own newspaper, The Weekly Herald.

Edison worked very hard. At the age of twenty-three, he set up an engineering firm. He invented many things. Some of his notable contributions to society included the development of the light bulb, the phonograph and the movie camera. He also made improvements on the telegraph and the typewriter.
