NEWS Letter columnist Nick Garbutt today reflects on the Hillsborough disaster recalling the tears of his newsroom staff at Liverpools Daily Post as they worked through the dark days of April 1989. Yesterday, a damning report laid bare a shocking cover-up which attempted to shift the blame for the tragedy on to the victims. At the time a news editor with the Merseyside paper, Mr Garbutt describes being overwhelmed by the sight of the victims pictures piled up on his desk. Prime Minister David Cameron has led the apologies including one from the chief constable of South Yorkshire Police, whose officers altered statements unfavourable to the force. Relatives of the 96 dead football fans say they will pursue criminal prosecutions against those who should hang their heads in shame. A Liverpool supporter from Belfast who travelled to Sheffield for the ill-fated FA Cup semi-final said he would never forget the sight of the fans being crushed, and that the truth was long overdue.
