Analysis (Week # 1) Date: 08/31/2010 Due Date: 09/07/2010

1. Introduction The goal of this experiment was to introduce us to different techniques of theoretical analysis of sinusoidal waves. The response of the voltage output across the capacitor was measured while the frequency of the input voltage was changed. 2. Theory There is a change in the output voltage as the frequency of the input voltage changes. The impedance of a capacitor in ac current is given by 1/jC, , the radian frequency, being equal to 2f. As the frequency increased, there was an increase in the radian frequency, which resulted in a decrease in the impedance of the circuit. This resulted in a decrease in the frequency output across the capacitor. The magnitude of the capacitor voltage was calculated to be 1/(1+1*10-62) and the phase angle was calculated to be tan-1(1*10-3)*180/. 3. Experimental Procedure The formula for the magnitude for the voltage of the capacitor and for the phase angle in degrees of the capacitor voltage was used to plot a graph. The circuit was then analyzed by a software and a graph was generated by the software of magnitude and phase angle versus frequency. Then it was checked to see if there was a match between the graph that was first plotted and the graph that was generated by the sinusoidal analysis. The two sets of graph matched. 4. Equipment List Microsoft Office Excel 2007 manufactured by Microsoft Corporation Inc. OrCAD Capture Student Edition manufactured by OrCAD Inc.

5. Data Section The data for the plot in Microsoft Excel along with the graphs in Microsoft Excel and PSpice are attached at the back of this lab report. 6. Analysis Section As mentioned in the theory section, as the frequency increases, the impedance of the capacitor decreases. This results in the capacitor acting more like a shorted circuit. This is clearly displayed by the decrease in magnitude of the voltage measured across the capacitor as the frequency increases. 7. Conclusion The lab experiment wanted to familiarize us with the use of software to theoretically predict what the results of an experiment will be before actually carrying the experiment out. The graphs obtained in two different ways matched, as was supposed to be the case.
