Stress-Strain Diagram! Properties

Modulus of Elasticityis the slope of the line in the elastic portion of the diagram before yielding takes place. ! This is the elastic region below the proportional limit in which elongation will elastically return to zero when the load is removed. ! ! Elastic Limit- At the critical stress point in a stress-strain diagram where the curve deviates from a straight line, the elastic limit of the material has been passed and further extension of the specimen results in permanent deformation. ! ! Yield Strength- The stress at which the steel starts to yield during the tension test is called the yield strength.

Stress-Strain Diagram! Hookes Law

Stress & Strain are directly proportional to one another, a relationship first discovered by Robert Hooke (16351703) and now referred to asHookes law.

Saint-Venant's principle!

States that the stresses remote from the point of application of the load are not affected by the precise behaviour of the structure close to the point of application of the load.

Factor of safety
In engineering, a factor of safety is applied in the design of objects or structures in various ways. !
!

It is essentially a comparison between the strength of the material or structure and the stress we wish to apply to it ensuring that the design is safe for that material or that object or structure.!
