CASE STUDY : NEW DELHI

POLICIES AND PROPOSAL FOR NEW TOWNS SUGGESTED BY NCR PLANNING BOARD The New Towns selected for development should have a strong industrial content and Incentives should be given for location of large, medium and small scale industries by developing industrial estates in these towns. Incentives, concessions and infrastructure should be made available in these New Towns to encourage and accelerate the growth of trades for wholesale as well as retail. Tree plantation should be carried out on cultivable waste and barren lands and public lands, similarly parks, wildlife, bird sanctuary etc. could be developed for tourist attraction in these New Towns.

Green buffer zone will have to be proposed in preventing the


neighbouring settlements from merging with each other and help to preserve their special character. The green buffer zone policies are designed to restrain the encroachments of urban activities into the open

rural areas.
Provision of ring loads or bye-pass roads for each town to divert the through traffic which is not needed to enter into the New Town. All the

neighbourhoods in the New Town should have good accessibility of roads


with sufficient widths. Providing overall (map No. 12) transportation links in the region with linking all the towns.

Provision of basic infrastructure facilities like water supply, power, sewerage


and storm water drainage to all New Towns for speedy development.

Provision of lower level facilities like higher secondary Schools, primary Schools, and dispensaries, and higher level facilities like College, Hospital, Police station. Recreational facilities etc. in each New Town.

The residential neighborhoods should be planned and located in such a way that they should not be affected due to pollution from industries. Wind direction shall have to be considered while preparing layouts for neighborhoods.

This way N.C.R. planning board has suggested policies and proposals for planning and development of New Towns in N.C.R.
