Our post-modern, Brechtian styling of the scene between Mrs.

Pilkings and Olunde in Death and the Kings Horseman drew on the line what is the color thing? to create a very overt representation of the race issues of the scene and play. We put the characters in costumes that represented the race they belonged to, which was meant to convey not only the sense of race distinction, but also the racial state of mind being displayed in this scene. We also put a line down the center of the stage to represent that the characters can come very close to understanding each other, and yet are afraid to finally cross the line to being on equal terms, in a world that isnt black and white. Though the acting itself if very realistic, the overt elements of the scenic and costume design contribute to the sense of symbolism of the scene. Race is the issue that all the characters are affected by, yet none are willing to address. We put the issue of race right in the front of the audience, to force them to confront the racial issues of the scene and characterizations.
