Erie County Comptroller David Shenk Announces Water Authority Audit

ERIE COUNTY, NY Erie County Comptroller David J. Shenk announced today that his office is commencing an audit of the Erie County Water Authority (ECWA) for the period January 1, 2011 through August 31, 2012. The Comptrollers office delivered notice to the ECWA on Friday that they would schedule an entrance interview for this week. The last comprehensive audit of the ECWA was in 2000. The Erie County Water Authority must be held to the same standards as any other public agency, said Shenk. This audit is long overdue. The objective of the audit is to determine the progress made by ECWA in implementing appropriate steps to correct weaknesses/deficiencies noted in prior audits. The Comptroller will also review hiring and purchasing practices. Included in the examination will be an operation and performance comparison with other water authorities. Lastly, the audit will include compliance with the requirements of the New York State Public Authorities Law as well as with internal operating policies and procedures. ###
