Chapter Three: Existing Condition of the Study Area (Water Supply)

3.1 Existing condition As the other name of water is life, so the condition of the supply of water should be well enough. But if the existing condition of water supply is illustrated then it could be seen that the scenario is not satisfactory. In ward no. 44 of Dhaka city, the responsible authority for water supply is the semiautonomous Dhaka Water Supply and Sewerage Authority (DWASA). There is a planned map of that authority which consists the pipe line plan, the orientation of the lines, the width of that pipe lines, water flow orientations etc. as the study area is a complete residential area and there is no illegal settlement, all formal settlement of the area is covered by the water supply of the DWASA, a very high level condition for a low income country. So there is no problem about area coverage, but there is water quality related problem in the study area. Access to safe drinking water is disturbed here for the contamination of iron in the water. Iron problem is the major problem for the dwellers of the study area according to the complaint from the dwellers during survey. Though there seems to be problems in the supply system in dry season, the continuation of the supply is satisfactory here, maximum gets 24 hour water supply in the other seasons, which is a good sign about water supply. 3.2 Plan of existing water supply network From the plan it can be noticed that the width of the pipe line serving various buildings is 100 , with the increase of the distance from the buildings, there appears pipe of 150 , two or more 150 links with another 200 , in the same process there are pipelines of 250 , 300 inside the study area. But the width increases outside the study area as pipeline width increases with the decreasing distance from the main source. There is five DTW in the study area, the location of which has been showed in the map.
