If a chess statistician were to try and satisfy his curiosity over which stage of the game proved decisive

in the majority of cases, he would certainly come to conclusion that it is the middle game that provides the most decisive stage. This is quite understandable since the opening is the stage when your forces are mobilised, and the endgame is the time when we have the basic clash of forces, when the basic question, who is to win, is settled.
