Describe the distinct characteristics of mushrooms, yeasts, and molds that make them different from green plants.

How these characteristics help them in their function in the food chain?
-

they are all fungi, and thus heterotrophs (they get energy from outside of themselves by digestion) unlike plants, which are autotrophs (they make their own food via photosynthesis)

- these organisms fail to synthesize their own food and are dependent on the producers or autotrophs, for the supply of organic compounds required for their growth and nutrition. As heterotrophs obtain energy from producers, they function as consumers in the food chain. - A heterotroph is an organism that is incapable of making its own food from light or inorganic compounds, and feeds on organisms or the remains of other organisms to get its necessary energy to survive.
