org September 28, 2011 Governor Signs Proclamation Declaring Habitat for Humanity Day in West Virginia! October 01, 2012 Huntington, WV Governor Tomblin signed a proclamation declaring Habitat for Humanity Day in West Virginia. Presented by the Governors representative, the proclamation declares this first Monday of October to be Habitat for Humanity Day in West Virginia. The date is significant to Habitat for Humanity who supports the United Nations efforts to promote World Habitat Day throughout the world. The first Monday of October was officially designated World Habitat Day by the United Nations and first celebrated in 1987. The purpose of the day is to reflect on the state of our cities and towns and the basic human right to adequate shelter. It also aims to remind the world of its collective responsibility for the habitat of future generations. Although Habitat for Humanity sees every day as a good day to go to work for affordable housing, World Habitat Day is a special chance to join the rest of the world to emphasize the need for a decent place to live. This years proclamation is being presented at the home site of The 25th Anniversary Celebration House The Silver Lining Home in Huntington. Habitat for Humanity is celebrating its 25th anniversary in WV in 2012. The year-long celebration of building is well underway with 18 of the 25 homes completed or under construction. We are very pleased to have the Governors support and to have an official Habitat for Humanity Day in our State, says David Michael, Board President for Habitat for Humanity of West Virginia. The designated day is another venue for us to promote statewide awareness and support to not only the work of Habitat, but to bring awareness to the need of safe, decent, affordable housing for all West Virginia families. Since 1987, over 700 West Virginia families have had the opportunity to have a home of their own because of Habitat for Humanity and its dedicated volunteers, said Gov. Tomblin. All of us and especially Habitat volunteers should take great pride in knowing that beyond the basic shelter provided to families, their efforts provide a foundation for their future.
