PROJECT BLUE LIGHT

The Waterford Police Department will be participating in the nationwide "Project Blue Light" initiative supporting the local police department, and to honor those officers killed in the line of duty across the nation. Project Blue Light began in 1988 by Mrs. Dolly Craig, the mother-in-law of Danny Gleason, a Philadelphia police officer killed in the line of duty in 1986. Mrs. Craig contacted Concerns of Police Survivors (C.O.P.S.) and stated she would be placing blue lights in her front window to remember Officer Gleason and his widow Pam who died in an auto accident earlier in 1988. The idea has since spread nationwide and has been shared with others. The color blue symbolizes peace and the "thin blue line" associated with law enforcement. As the line of duty deaths have increased over the past few years, now more than ever the blue light is needed as a reminder for those who have made the ultimate sacrifice for their communities. The bulb you display will send a dual message. It's light will shine bright in the night remembering those who have fallen, and to show support for those who continue to protect and serve in your community. The Waterford Police Department was given the blue lights from Waterford Wal-Mart manager Alan Centazzo, and we will be giving the lights out to members of the Waterford Community. The lights can be picked up at the lobby window of the Waterford Police Department. If you choose to, we will be collecting a voluntary $5.00 donation (tax deductible) which will go to the National Police Memorial in Washington DC. The National Police Memorial is currently building a Museum to honor the men and women of law enforcement who have died in the performance of their duties. The lights fit into a standard "holiday" style candle that people are encouraged to place in their windows or other areas visible from the street. The Waterford Police Department is asking that you illuminate your blue lights from Thursday, November 1st through Wednesday, November 14th. We will again ask you to participate in May, which is when the National Police Memorial participates in Police Week. A follow up will be placed on the Waterford Patch at that time. If you have any questions, please contact Officer Tadeusz Ted Krysztofiak at tkrysztofiak@waterfordct.org. Thank you for your support in this special program.
