$2 million upgrade at Narwee Public School opened

Foreign Minister Kevin Rudd visits Hurstville

Foreign Minister Mr Kevin Rudd MP recently visited Hurstville to help me to get to know the members of our local Chinese community. As Mr Rudd speaks Mandarin and is obviously well informed on matters to do with China, it is important that he has an opportunity to meet with members of our local community. He enjoyed his visit very much and has promised to return. Over the coming months it is my intention to ask other Ministers to visit the electorate to provide forums and access for all community members on matters of interest to them.

Over the past few months I have been delighted to receive invitations from schools in the electorate for the official openings of the projects completed under the Building the Education Revolution program. I look forward to attending more. On 3 May 2011, I was particularly pleased to attend Narwee Public School for the opening of new and refurbished classrooms, a new activity space, upgraded school

exteriors, sewerage system and, disabled toilets, the resurfaced basketball court, and replaced timber verandahs. Narwee is an area that has done it tough over the years so to see what just over $2 million dollars can provide was exciting. My congratulations to Ms Rene Demos, the Principal, and the school community for all their hard work.

Lucy Chieng Aged Care Centre opened

The Australian Nursing Home Foundation (ANHF) recently opened its newest aged care facility at Hurstville. The ANHF is responsible for the establishment of nursing homes, community housing facilities, day care centres, and the administration of a number of Community Home Care Packages. The Hon Mark Butler MP, Minister for Mental Health and Ageing, officially opened the Centre in April. This brings to a conclusion the hard work of Mr Hatton Kwok, Ms Ada Cheng and the management team at the Lucy Chieng Aged Care Centre.

Daryl Melham Writes

As a nation weve got to live within our means, just like families do, which is why the Budget will bring Australia back to surplus in 2012-13. The Budget is also about what we value as a nation, so even in a tight Budget, the Government has made new investments in vital areas like health and education. This budget will get more Australians in jobs and spread the opportunities of the mining boom building a strong economy for all Australians.

Whats in the Budget for your family?

Creating 500,000 jobs in the next two years. Helping families out where we can increasing family payments for 650,000 teenagers (over 5 years) by up to $4,200 and making sure low-income earners get more in their pay packets ($300 a year) rather than having to wait until the end of the year. Extending the Education Tax Refund to allow eligible parents to claim for school uniforms and giving the option of having child care payments delivered fortnightly. Giving small businesses a tax break so that they will get a $5,000 instant write-off for cars, trucks and utes. And cutting spending to take pressure off inflation.
Easing cost of living pressures for your family From 1 January 2012, FTB-A rates will be increased for 16-19 year olds in full time secondary study by up to $4,208 a year for 16 and 17 year olds, and up to $3,741 a year for 18 and 19 year olds. Providing 6.5 million taxpayers with up to $300 more of the Low Income Tax Offset (LITO) during the year rather than at the end of the year. Letting families choose to have Child Care Rebate paid when it suits them, such as fortnightly or weekly, from 1 July 2011. Delivering an improved pension work bonus so that age pensioners can keep more of their income from work. In addition to the measures in this budget, weve delivered income tax cuts since coming to office meaning that a person on: $30,000 will have had their annual tax bill cut by $750, or 23% $50,000 will have had their annual tax bill cut by $1,750, or 17% $80,000 will have had their annual tax bill cut by $1,400 or 7% Plus we have raised pensions age pensions are $128 a fortnight higher for singles, and $116 higher for couples since 2009.

Supporting training and jobs

The Government will invest $3 billion in new skills initiatives over 6 years, including: Workforce Development Fund that will deliver 130,000 training places (over 4 years) directly tailored to industry skill needs placing industry at the heart of the training effort. Improve the apprenticeship system to allow apprentices to progress faster if their skills warrant it (rather than serving out time). Support up to 40,000 apprentices with mentoring, which will help more apprentices stay the course. Provide 30,000 more places in the Language, Literacy and Numeracy program to deliver the basic skills essential for a job.

Massive boost for mental health support

The Governments $2.2 billion Mental Health Reform package provides more intensive support services in those communities that need it most, with 30 new Headspace clinics as well as early detection to support young people who struggle with mental illness.
