Increasing/decreasing function

To determine if a function is increasing or decreasing, you need to look at the curve from left to right either side of the stationary point. When y = 0, means the curve is at the turning point (maximum or minimum) Eg) Increasing Decreasing

Eg) State the intervals of increase and decrease of y = x2 6x y = 2x 6 S.P when 0 = 2x 6 6 = 2x x=3 When x = 3, y = 32 (6 x 3) = -9 (3, -9) Now y = 2 Positive second derivative means a minimum function. Sample Questions: Decreasing x < 3 Increasing x > 3

1. Find all stationary points, test their nature and state values for which the curve of y = x3 6x2 15x + 1 is increasing and decreasing. X-coordinate: X-coordinate: Y = 3x2 12x 15 S.P when y = 0 0 = 3x2 12x 15 0 = 3(x2 4c 5) 0 = 3(x 5)(x + 1) X = 5; x = -1 X = 5: X = 5: y = 53 (6 x 52) (15 x 5) + 1 = -99 (5, -99) X = -1: -13 (6x 12) (15 x -1) + 1 = 9 (-1, 9) Now y = 6x 12 X = 5, y = (6 x 5) 12 = 18 (minimum) X = -1, y = (6 x -1) 12 = -18 (maximum) (5, -99) Minimum (-1, -18) Maximum Because x = -1 is maximum, while x = 5 is minimum: Increase when x < -1, or x > 5 Decrease when -1 < x < 5 2. The velocity (v) of a car t seconds after it leaves a set of lights is given by the equation V = -t2 5t + 6. Find the max velocity of the car. V = -t2 5t + 6 V = -2t 5

V = -2 Max when V = 0 0 = -2t 5 5 = -2t T= When t = , V = - ( )2 (5 x 12.25 is max velocity ) + 6 = 12.25
