Practical 9
Answers including diagrams should be clearly hand written, and start with question number. First page should be a signed cover sheet. Submission of the answers to Question 1 and 2 to MEC2406 Assignment Box outside Mech Eng office by 6 pm, 5 Oct Friday. Late submission should have time stamped by the staff in Mech Eng office. No submission will be accepted after solution is posted before next practical lab (2 pm, Oct 11 Thursday).

Question 1 (J&M 17.27) A bevel pinion and shaft are shown in the figure. Bearing A takes thrust, The left end of the shaft is coupled to an electric motor, and the right end is free. Load components applied by the mating bevel gear are shown.

(a) Draw load, shear force, and bending moment diagrams for the shaft in both horizontal and vertical planes, plus torsional-load and axial-load diagrams. (b) Determine the radial and thrust loads applied to the two bearings. (c) Identify the critically loaded shaft cross section and estimate the safety factor with respect to eventual fatigue failure using the following data: shaft diameter = 33 mm, Kf=1.3 , 1.2, and 1.2 for bending, torsional, and axial loading, respectively; material is steel with Su=900 MPa and Sy=700 MPa; and critical surfaces have a ground finish.

Question 2 (J&M 17.10) Determine the critical speed of rotation for the steel shaft shown in the Figure below.
