Aarthi Sivasankar 9/24/12 How to Steal a Dog

Book Report

Barbara O Connors sneaky and mischievous novel How to Steal a Dog tells the story about an eleven year old girl and her six year old brother stealing a dog and getting reward money for finding it so they can have enough money to move back into a real house. The story starts out with the narrator Georgina Hayes, narrating that the day she decided to steal a dog was when her best friend Luanne Godfrey knew she lived in a car. Georgina states that she pretended like she lives in apartment 3B, didnt wear the same shirt as yesterday, and didnt wash her hair at the gas station. Georgina, her little brother Toby, and mama all got kicked off from the apartment since they couldnt pay the rent. Georginas dad just left the family with all the money they had except for a jar of bills. Surely, and obviously, the money wasnt enough to pay the rent. Then the night after school, Georgina sees a reward sign for a lost dog which was five hundred dollars for the reward money. She knew that would be enough money and started writing her steps and plans on how to steal a dog in her purple sparkly notebook. Georgina gets very excited at the thought of having money to live in a real live house, but feels real bad for stealing such a cute puppy the next day after school. In the end of course, she tells the truth to the puppy owner, Carmella didnt have the five hundred dollars but gave one hundred dollars since she had sympathy for Georgina. She is quite upset at first but gets over it. Meanwhile, Georginas mama gets like eight hundred dollars from working multiple jobs. The three of them finally moved into their in new home and as Georgina went to sleep that night, she thought if things go bad in the beginning, if you believe in yourself, things can go better in the end.
