Local Athletes Take Part in All-Star Football Game


By Dave Burnham As the Mercury soared over 100 degrees at a scorching Rentschler Field, four local area athletes proudly wore the colors of Team Connecticut in the annual Governors Cup All-Star football game against Rhode Island on June 30. In front of approximately 2,000 fans, Connecticut literally sweated out a 14-8 victory that was only assured in the dying seconds of the game when New Londons Jevon Elmore picked off a RI pass. This was Connecticuts 10th straight win against Rhody. In April, more than 170 seniors from around CT tried out for the game at Southington HS. The final 55-man squad, coached by Hartford Publics Harry Bellucci, contained representatives from 34 schools. Local interest was provided by three Cromwell Panthers, QB Anthony Morales, WR Mike Antonio and WR Brett Director and Wethersfields defensive lineman Emir Kuljancic. Morales, unable to take the field due to an arm injury, gave support from the sidelines as his teammates all played their part in an exciting game. Antonio and Director will be heading off to Assumption College in Worcester, MA. Kuljancic will be departing to Cushing Academy in Ashburnham, MA, while Morales will be studying at Yale. This may have been the last Governors Cup game to be played against RI. There are rumors that both New York And New Jersey want to play against Connecticut next year. While another rumor doing the rounds is that the game will be between two all-star teams from the CT, which could mean players from the same school playing against each other.
