Exponents After going through this website I have learned a lot about exponents.

A base (the bottom number) tells you the factor that is being multiplied. A power (the top number) tells you how many times you will multiply your factor also known as you base. A base and a power tell you to multiply the base by itself a certain amount of times based on how large the power is. A power is a shortcut to really long multiplication that you dont have to write out. When you square a number it is represented by area and when you cube a number it is represented by volume.

Base 2 2 2 2 2 2 2 2 2

Exponent 4 3 2 1 0 -1 -2 -3 -4

Meaning 2*2*2*2 2*2*2 2*2 2 2/2 2/4 2/8 2/12 2/16

Value 16 12 8 2 1 0.5 0.25 0.166 0.125

As you increase to exponent the operation you are doing is multiplication. As you decrease the exponents the operation you are doing is division.
What do you get when you add x by x? 2x What do you get when you subtract x by x? 0 What do you get when you multiply x by x? x^2 What do you get when you divide x by x? 1 What do you get when you multiply x by x by x?

x^3 What about x by x by x by x by x? x^5 What do you get when you multiply x^2 by x? x^3 What about x^2 by x^3? x^5 What about x^4 by x^6? x^10 Come up with a rule that explains what happens when you multiply same bases. When you multiply same bases you have to first change your exponents to real numbers then multiply them together. What do you get when you divide x by x? 1 What do you get when you multiply x^2 by x? x^3 What about x^4 by x^2? x^6 What do you get when you divide x^5 by x^3? x^2 What about x^6 by x? 6 Come up with a rule that explains what happens when you divide same bases. When you divide same bases you have to first change your exponents to real numbers then divide them together. What do you get when you square x^3? x^4 What do you get when you square x^4? x^5 What do you get when you cube x^2? x^6 What do you get when you raise x^3 to the fourth power? x^12 What do you get when you raise x^2 to the fifth power? x^10 Come up with a rule that explains what happens when you raise a base with an exponent by an exponent. You can just add all of your exponents together to get your total amount of exponents.
