CERN, in Geneva, has recently announced experimental observations which match the expectation from the Higgs boson

and since then the world at large has been rejoicing. Why is the Higgs boson, also referred to as the God particle, so very crucial in our understanding of Nature? We take a stroll through this subject and observe the gradual emergence over decades of a coherent picture of the fundamental particles and their interactions. The Higgs boson happens to be a key player in these ideas. So, unless its existence is experimentally established this panoramic masterpiece cannot be deemed complete. How was this accomplished? Our trip ends with a question: what then remains to be done? This talk is aimed at a general audience.
