MAE 3314: Heat Transfer Homework #4 Key Assignment (Due date 9/28/12) Passing Score 70/100 * Show your

r step by step problem solving procedure or no points will be credited. 1. An electric resistance heater is embedded in a long cylinder of diameter 30 mm. When water with a temperature of 25 oC and velocity of 1 m/s flows crosswise over the cylinder, the power per unit length of cylinder required to maintain the surface at a uniform temperature of 90 oC is 28 kW/m. When air, also at 25 oC, but with a velocity of 10 m/s is flowing, the power per unit length required to maintain the same surface temperature is 400 W/m. Calculate and compare the convection coefficients for the flows of water and air. [20 pts] 2. The heat flux that is applied to the left face of a plane wall is q = 20 W/m2. The wall is of thickness L = 10 mm and of thermal conductivity k = 12 W/m-K. If the surface temperature of the wall are measured to be 50 oC on the left side and 30 oC on the right side, do steady-state conditions exist? Give the reasoning of your answer. [20 pts] 3. A steam pipe of 0.12-m outer diameter is insulated with a layer of calcium silicate (k = 0.060 W/m-K). If the insulation is 20 mm thick and its inner and outer surfaces are maintained at Ts,1 = 800 K and Ts,2 = 490 K, respectively, what is the heat loss per unit length (q) of the pipe? [20 pts] 4. A 30-cm-long, 1-cm-diameter aluminum fin (k=237 W/mK) is exposed to an environment at 22 oC. The base temperature of the fin is maintained at 80 oC. The heat transfer coefficient between the rod and the surrounding air is 11 W/m2K. If the fin can be assumed to be very long, determine the fin efficiency. [20 pts] 5. Derive the nodal temperature equation for the case of an exterior corner node with one adjacent side insulated and one adjacent side subject to a convective heat transfer as shown in Figure below.
