EFFECT OF WATER REGIME ON POPLAR CULTIVATION
bstract: The effect of water regime on the growth and development of plantations
of hydrologically conditioned species, poplars was researched in the alluvial plain
of the river Tami. The investigations were carried out during the period 2000-2003
on the area of FA Opovo, KO Sakule, and the study results elucidate the very complex relationships between the hydrological conditions of the site and the growth and
increment of the study poplar plantations, cl. I-214.
Key words: flood regime, water level, poplar, current increment, stress

EFFECT OF WATER REGIME ON POPLAR CULTIVATION
Summary
The effect of water regime on the growth and development of poplar cl. I-214 plantations
was researched in the alluvial plain of the river Tami, KO Sakule, The study covers the period 19952003 but the bioindication investigations of the study locality were carried out during the period
2000-2003. Based on the adopted methodology, poplar plantations of different ages were analysed,
12, 16 and 20 years old, on the sample plots established for that purpose.
The comparative analysis of the site hydrological conditions and current volume increment
shows that the length of flooding and water retention in the concrete conditions of hydromorphic
soils can have both favourable and unfavourable effects on poplar growth and development. The duration of high water levels of 78 days and the water percolation to the soil layer deeper than 120cm
up to 77 days favourably affects the increment of poplar plantations. The short period of flood of 19
days, and the long-lasting water retention of 150 days, in the soil profile shallower than 120cm leads
to waterlogging, the consequence of which is the shortage of oxygen in the root system, which causes
the decrease of increment, i.e.the reduction of assimilation organs and finally the plant death.
