The Abruzzo during the Roman Empire

The Imperial Abruzzo


In the fourth century BC, Abruzzo was conquered and Romanized. There was a famous fighting against the Samnites, and the people of Abruzzo entered into the world of Rome with the same rights of Roman citizens. The cities were restructured and the construction of roads allowed the intensification of traffic and trade. The main growing centers of Abruzzo were the Roman municipalities of Chieti, Teramo and the cities of Amiternum Alba Fucens, Atri, Penne, Forcona, Aveia, , Peltuino, Corfinio. With the fall of the Roman Empire our region suffered several devastation, and later was conquered by the Byzantines and then be divided in Lombard times, in two parts (Abruzzi).

Its historical origins are mixed with mythology, it is said that it was founded in 1181 BC by the hero Achilles, who named it in honor of his mother Tehate.

The hero is represented in the coat of arms on a prancing horse, while holding a spear and a shield on which is depicted a white cross on a red field with four keys, which represent the four input ports of Chieti medieval

SALLUSTIO

Gaius Sallust was a Roman historian.

He was born in Amiternum (Sabina) in 86 B.C. He moved to Rome for his studies, where he frequented the circle of the philosopher Nigidio Figulo. He was a praetor in 49 and in 47 was alongside Cesare which made him a senator, until his tragic death in 46 got the proconsul of Numidia. At Caesar's death he retired to private life devoting himself to literary otium.

Ovidio
Publio Ovidio Nasone was a famous roman poet whose life we dont know much: the only evidences we have come from his own biography. He was born in Sulmona, Abruzzo (It) on the 43 B.C. in 20th of March. He was exiliated on the 8 A.C. during the August governament, then he has been banished in Tomi for obscures reasons. He wrote a huge number of texts, divided in three groups: 1)The youthfull works or loving; 2)Major works or of maturity; 3)The exil works. He has never returned back to his country.
