Mixtures and Compounds

Mixture
Two or more substances that are not chemically combined. Mixtures can be separated by physical means.
Examples: Separating fruit in a fruit salad. Sorting papers from your backpack.

Heterogeneous Mixtures
Components are not mixed evenly. Components can be seen individually. Each component retains its own properties.

Homogenous Mixtures
Components are mixed evenly. You cant see the individual components. Another name for this is a solution. Examples: olive oil, vinegar, salt water.

Compounds
Two or more different elements that have chemically combined. A new substance is formed. Examples: salt (Na + Cl), water (H2 + O), carbon dioxide (C + O2).
