Local home owners have been shocked to learn that from next year they could be facing property tax bills of hundreds of euro a year even if they are on low income, live alone or are in negative equity. It is estimated that a family with an average house could be forced to pay up to 800 a year under this new system. This is most unfair. A property tax based on market value alone would be extremely unfair. Dublin homeowners would face exorbitant bills compared to those in other parts of the country. It fails to take into account the income of households, whether people are unemployed or pensioners, the extent of the mortgage crisis, those in negative equity and those paying management fees. Does the Government expect these people to pay hundreds of euro a year in property taxes? It is clear that now is not the time to heap new charges and taxes on people already struggling to pay their bills. The Government needs to prioritise other burning issues first and get people back to work before considering new charges on peoples homes. For these reasons I and my colleagues will be strenuously opposing this new property tax. Deirdre Heney
