Battle of Hong Kong: Mount Butler ASL 19th December 1941: Sergeant Major John Robert Osborn, of the

Canadian Winnipeg Grenadiers, was the sole recipient of the Victoria Cross during the Battle of Hong Kong. Here is an extract of the citation the Company led by Osborn captured the hill at the point of bayonet and held it for 3 hours the Company was cut off and completely surrounded by the enemy who were able to approach to within grenade throwing distanceseveral enemy grenades were thrown which Osborn picked up and threw backa grenade landed in a position where it was impossible to pick up and return in time Shouting a warning he threw himself on the grenade which exploded killing him instantly. His selfsacrifice saved the lives of many others.
