Generic Name Ferrous sulfate

Frequency Route Each 100 mg of ferrous sulfate provides 20 mg of elemental iron, about 30 mg of elemental iron in ferrous sulfate dried products. 150 to 300 mg P.O. elemental iron daily in three divided doses. 15 to 30 mg elemental iro P.O. daily during las two trimesters.

Nsx Responsibility GI upset may be related to dose. Between-meal doses are preferable. Drug can be given with some foods, although absorption may be decreased. Enteric-coated products reduce GI upset but also reduce amount of iron absorbed.

Provides elemental iron, an essential component in the formation of hemoglobin.

Iron deficiency As a supplement during pregnancy

Contraindicated in patients with hemosiderorsis, primary hemochromatosis, hemolytic anemia (unless patient also has iron deficiency anemia), peptic ulceration, ulcerative colitis, or regional enteritis and in those receiving repeated blood transfusions.
