Introduction: To know how corn pops best. Hypothesis: The heat makes the popcorn pop.

Materials: Popcorns, saucepan, lid and oil. Steps:

1. 2. 3. 4. 5.

Measure two batches of unpopped popcorn 1/3 of a cup of each. Soak one batch in a shallow bowl filled with water. Pop the second batch and count the unpopped kernels. Drain off the water and pat the kernels dry with a paper towel. Pop the wet batch of kernels. When the popping stops, count how many pieces remain unopened.

Results: Popcorn- 90/100 of the wet kernels popped. 95/100 dry kernels popped.

Conclusion: Dry kernels pop better than wet kernels when heated. Bill Nye results: The water soaks in just a little bit and usually makes every kernel pop! Normally, water in the unpopped popcorn turns to steam in the heat of the popcorn popper and makes the kernel explode. Kernels that dont open in the heat dont build up enough steam inside. Soaking the kernels helps them build up enough pressure to explode and turn inside out. Other scientists found on the internet disagree with Bill Nyes results. Our conclusions were not the same as Bill Nyes conclusions. We would have to try this experiment a few more times to see the results.
