Maximum Marks: 50

PART-A (a) Answer all the 9 questions (b) Each question carries 2 Marks (c ) Any missing data can be assumed suitably 1. Mention any two important characteristics that distinguish fluids from solids. 2. Explain briefly the concept of continuum in fluid mechanics studies. Under what conditions does this concept break down? 3. Explain why in general, the viscosity of a liquid decreases and that of a gas increases, with increase in temperature. 4. Explain why the centre of pressure is always below the centroid of a submerged body. 5. Describe briefly the origin of surface tension of a liquid. What are its SI units ? 6. What do you mean by dimensional consistency of an equation? Explain giving an example. 7. 8. Estimate the capillary rise of water in a tube of 5 mm diameter ( Take = 0.075 N/m ) 9. An oceanographic laboratory module is to be designed for operation at 0.5 KM below the sea level. To what absolute pressure the module should be designed to withstand? (Take sea water = 1010 Kg / m3 ) 9 x 2 = 18

10)

A body weighs 20 N and 10 N, when immersed in two liquids of specific gravity 0.8 and 1.2 respectively. Find its weight in air and the density. (6) OR On an unknown planet, the acceleration due to gravity g is 3.0 m / s 2 . Find the force of gravity on 400 liters of a material having a mass density of 800 Kg / m3 (6)

11)

A giraffe eats leaves from a tree 6 meters tall and bends down to the ground to drink water. Estimate the blood pressure developed by the giraffes heart in this process. Compare it with the normal blood pressure of human beings which is 120 mm of mercury column. Take density of blood approximately as that of water. (6)
