The Calcutta Chromosome is definitely impressive owing to its distinct style of

writing. It takes the reader on a captivating journey through three different timelines, neatly intermingled with each other. On one hand, it begins at an unspecified time in the future by showing a tech-savvy yet routine world where technology is a major companion of people, which cannot be fooled. On the other hand it puts forth many historical events of the late nineteenth century. The writer has successfully filled the in-between time-gap by another set of events cleverly linking the two far-flung scenarios. The intelligent fusion of these parallel nevertheless outlying events is worth appreciating. This book cannot be classified as belonging to a particular kind or pattern. From fiction to science, from flashback to fast-forward, from futuristic to historical, the novel has presented a perfect blend of different styles. This is a rather assorted technique when compared to the other books by Amitav Ghosh; for instance the book The Glass Palace is historical, and The Shadow Lines is realistic. However, in this book Amitav Ghosh has expertly combined contrasting genres to present a thrilling tale. This unique approach is enhanced by the variety of characters in the story. Ranging from scientists to enchanters, celebrities to journalists, high-class folks to uncivilized entities, this book has it all. As the story progresses the advent of different characters keeps the reader awakened. The author has done a brilliant job in maintaining a balance and giving due space to each role.
