Press Release November 24, 2012

On Saturday 24, 2012 at approximately 12:50am, A Sheriffs Investigator observed a white Chevrolet pick-up truck traveling east bound at a high rate of speed on Central Avenue in the Town of Colonie. The Investigator turned around on Central and activated his emergency lights. The vehicle fled into the City of Albany. After trying to elude the Investigator, the pick-up truck struck a bicyclist; the bicyclist flew up onto the hood of the 1997 Chevrolet truck and was pinned to the ladder rack of the truck in the vicinity of Manning Blvd. The vehicle continued to flee and traveled back into Colonie before entering Niskayuna and Schenectady. Eventually the truck engine blew and the vehicle came to rest on Curry Road in the Town of Rotterdam, during the entire time the deceased bicyclist was pinned on the ladder rack. The driver of the truck was taken into custody and transported to Albany Medical Center. The Identity of the individual struck has not yet been determined, the investigation is ongoing. The pursuit involved members of the Albany County Sheriffs Office, Albany Police Department, Colonie Police, Guilderland Police, Niskayuna Police, Schenectady Police, Schenectady County Sheriffs, and Rotterdam Police. Subsequently, Pablo Cruz, age 39 of 1060 Helderberg Ave, Schenectady was charged with the following: Manslaughter 2nd C Felony Vehicular Manslaughter 2 D Felony DWI Parole Violation Cruz was arraigned in Albany Police Court and remanded to the Albany County Correctional Facility with no bail. Cruz was released from State Prison on November 02, 2012 More details will be released shortly on the victim.
