Standards
1.1.K.B.: Employ word recognition techniques: -Use association strategies to identify letters -Demonstrate phonological awareness through the segmenting and blending of phonemes. 1.1.K.E. Demonstrate accuracy and automaticity in phoneme segmentation, letter naming, lettersound correspondence, and blending (decoding) simple words.

Objective
SWBAT: 1. Recognize the sound /u/. 2. Identify the letter Uu. 3. Produce two words that have the /u/ sound in them.

Teaching
-Tell students what the short u sound says. -Set the timer for 2 minutes. Students should think of as many as words as they can that have the /u/ sound in it. Record words on the board. -Read Chick and Porcupines Rainy Day Adventure Students should put their hands up when they hear the /u/ sound. -After reading the book, discuss various short u words that were in the book. -Pass out Do You Hear Short U? -Gather around the carpet and explain the Upside down Umbrella Project. -Show students how to cut the pieces out and how to assemble. -Students may work on the floor for this project. -Once everyone has completed this project discuss directions of Do You Hear Short U? and complete one example together. Instruct students to complete the remainder of the worksheet on their own. -Once everyone is done, complete a second word web. Students should be able to recognize a few more words that begin with the short u sound.

Homework
Short U phonics pageStudents will find a picture from a magazine that has the /u/ sound in it and paste it to their homework page. Students should also draw a picture that has the short u sound in it and paste it to the same homework paper. Students should then write what the object is near each picture.

Accommodations
-Upside down Umbrella: A few students may be given the pre-cut pieces for this project. -Do You Hear Short u?: Some students may circle the pictures that have the /u/ sound in them rather than coloring them.
